Sanae Takaichi, the state minister for economic security, intends to run against Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party this fall, sources said.

They said the 63-old-year politician made her plans known during a June 29 closed door meeting held in the Diet specifically to support her bid.

The sources said Takaichi outlined the policies she stood for and indicated she would unveil an aggressive fiscal stimulus policy if she wins.

“Frankly speaking, I will run for president,” Takaichi said.

She ran for president in the previous election in 2021, with the backing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and garnered 114 votes from LDP Diet members, making her the second most popular of the four candidates.

As a disciple of Abe, she would be expected to push the policies he espoused. Toward that end, she has been working with conservative LDP lawmakers.

However, securing the 20 nominees necessary for her candidacy is considered likely to be a challenge, according to analysts.
