KITAYAMA, Wakayama Prefecture--The Okutorokyo gorge is famed for its white-water rapids and scenic landscape, and one of the most popular ways to revel in them fully is "ikada-kudari" log rafting.
Around 100 thrill-seekers took rides on traditional rafts crafted from eight whole trunks of cedar down the Kitayamagawa river here on May 3, the season’s opening day.
During the course of 6 kilometers and a little more than an hour, they let out excited cheers as they passed by rocks and got the splashes.
The log rafting tour is offered by reservation only until the end of September.
Riders must be between 10 and 75 years old, and the tour is not available for pregnant women and those who have consumed alcohol.
It costs 6,600 yen ($42) for adults and 3,300 yen for grade-schoolers.
