The 2025 Osaka Kansai Expo will be cashless, utilizing a facial recognition system for payments and visitor access management instead, the event’s organizers announced on May 23.
The system, developed by NEC Corp., will be one of the largest of its kind in Japan, according to the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition.
“The event will serve as a testing ground for promoting a cashless society in Japan,” the organizers said.
Facial recognition payments will be available using Myaku-pe!, the event’s mobile payment system. Users will need to register their biometric information beforehand.
This payment system will be accepted at all stores at the event except for food trucks and other mobile vendors.
Cash will not be accepted at the expo, but credit cards can still be used.
Entry tickets for the venue will be delivered as QR codes on electronic devices.
However, season and summer pass ticket holders will be required to undergo additional facial recognition checks.
This identification system is expected to streamline entry checkpoints by reducing staffing requirements and to ensure that multi-day passes are not being shared.
