A strong earthquake shook the Tohoku region on the morning of April 2, but there were no reports of injuries and no tsunami threat.
The quake struck at 4:24 a.m., with its epicenter off the coast of Iwate Prefecture and its focus estimated at about 80 kilometers deep, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
It had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 and registered intensities of lower-5 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Hachinohe and Misawa cities in Aomori Prefecture, and Miyako and Kuji cities in Iwate Prefecture, the agency said.
