Japan picked German director Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days” as its entry for the 2024 Oscars in the best international feature category, the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan Inc. announced.
The film debuted to rave reviews at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, earning Best Actor award for Koji Yakusho, who plays the leading role, making him the second Japanese actor to win the prize.
The film, which is set in Tokyo and was produced in Japan, is slated to open nationwide on Dec. 22.
The director is currently serving as jury president of the International Competition category at the 36th Tokyo International Film Festival that opened Oct. 23.
“Perfect Days” opened the festival.
Official nominations for the award will be selected from a pool of entries from each respective country.
The winner will be announced next March.
