Director Ryo Orikasa won the Grand Prize for Short Animation for his “Miserable Miracle” at the 47th Ottawa International Animation Festival.
It is the third year running for a Japanese director to win the top award in the short film category, upon which the festival places the most importance.
The prize went to Honami Yano for her “Honekami” (A Bite of Bone) in 2021. Atsushi Wada’s “Bird in the Peninsula” claimed the accolade in 2022.
Koji Yamamura, who won the Grand Prize for Feature Animation for his “Dozens of Norths” at the festival last year, received the Award for Best Virtual Reality Animation for his “My Inner Ear Quartet.”
The Ottawa event wrapped up Sept. 24. It is regarded as one of the world’s most respected animation events and on a par with those held in Annecy in France, Zagreb in Croatia and Hiroshima. The Hiroshima festival ended in 2020.
