The 13th typhoon of the season is now moving off the southern coast of Japan and expected to approach eastern areas from Sept. 7 to 9 before making landfall near the Kanto region. It is then projected to move northward toward the Tohoku region.

The typhoon was located about 320 kilometers east of Minami-Daitojima island as of 3 p.m. on Sept. 6 and moving northeast at a speed of 30 kph. It had a central pressure of 1,000 hectopascals and a maximum wind speed of 65 kph near the center. Maximum instantaneous wind speeds clocked 90 kph.

Moist air flowing into the frontal area extending from northeastern Japan to western Japan made atmospheric conditions unstable over a wide area from western to northern Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

It said a linear precipitation zone may develop over the Izu Islands and the Tokai region through the morning of Sept. 7.

Rainfall amounts expected for the next 24 hours until 6 p.m. on the same day are: 250 mm in the Izu Islands, 150 mm in the Tokai region  and 100 mm in the Tohoku and Kanto-Koshin regions.
