Award-winning director Ryusuke Hamaguchi's new film "Evil Does Not Exist" has been entered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in competition for the top Golden Lion award.
The festival is one of the three most prestigious filmfests in the world, along with Berlin and Cannes.
Previously, the director received the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival for "Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy" and the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes International Film Festival for "Drive My Car."
Hamaguchi was inspired to work on his latest narrative film after he was asked by Hideko Ishibashi, who composed the original score for "Drive My Car," to produce a video for her live performance.
Cast members include Hitoshi Omika and Ryo Nishikawa.
Meanwhile, Shinya Tsukamoto's "Shadow of Fire" will be screened in the Orizzonti section for cutting-edge films at the festival.
The Venice festival will be held Aug. 30-Sept. 9 in the northern Italian city.
