TAKYAMA, Gifu Prefecture--“Ninja sword ice cream” may be just the thing to kill a raging thirst and revive a fighting spirit this summer.
The sword-shaped popsicle will be offered for takeout at Ninja Cafe Takayama for 1,000 yen a pop, including tax, from July 22.
At 45 centimeters long, including the black handle, the popsicle is claimed to be the “longest ice cream in Japan.”
The more is better concept is designed to help beat the heat.
The blade is 2 cm wide and milk-flavored. The company expects to sell around 10 sword popsicles a day.
Maruyasu Co. based in Gifu, the prefectural capital, operates the cafe.
Yasumasa Mochizuki, 28, the store manager, was in charge of the development.
He made a number of prototypes with the aim of making the snacks more appealing in photographs so customers can walk around while eating them.
Mochizuki mixed powdered agar to prevent the “blades” from melting in the sweltering heat and leaving purchasers with sticky fingers.
The cafe is open on weekends and holidays.
“The blades bend easily and snap when you do ‘chanbara,’” Mochizuki said.
