Around 130,000 “My Number” cards have been incorrectly linked to a family member’s bank account of the card holder, the government announced on June 7.

At a news conference, Taro Kono, minister for digital transformation, said the bank accounts have been registered to My Number Cards to receive public money, such as cash handouts.

He said that the government will urge those concerned to link their My Number Card to their own bank accounts by sending notifications through “Mynaportal,” a government administrative website.

Kono said an investigation also found 748 cases where My Number Cards are linked to bank accounts that are neither in the name of the card holders nor their family members.

“To enable everyone to register their bank accounts to receive public payments with peace of mind, and to make such payments quickly and securely, we will continue to strive to win people’s trust,” Kono said.

In most of these cases, parents are believed to have registered their own bank accounts with their child’s My Number Cards.

Kono had said at a news conference on June 6 that the Digital Agency received a report about incorrect registrations from the National Tax Agency in February but that the information was not shared among Digital Agency officials, including the minister.
