A symbolic three-day search was mounted April 22 for six passengers of a pleasure boat that sank off eastern Hokkaido a year ago.

The search effort was organized by Hokkaido prefectural police and the 1st Regional Coast Guard Headquarters off the coast of the scenic Shiretoko Peninsula. It involved four Japan Coast Guard boats as well as two helicopters.

Plans to board a cutter anchored off the coast at Rausu Port, one of the departure points, and conduct a sea search northward had to be aborted due to strong winds and snow.

Instead, a land route was taken to reach the coast.

The search for the missing passengers was the first in four months due to filthy winter weather and drift ice. The current search will last for three days.

The Kazu I pleasure boat sank off the Shiretoko Peninsula on April 23, 2022, with 26 people on board. There were no survivors.
