FUKUOKA--One of the largest net zero energy buildings (ZEBs) in western Japan will be constructed here, which is being touted as a commercial complex that is environmental friendly.
Nishi-Nippon Railroad Co. in Fukuoka obtained the ZEB certificate for a zone in which buildings are expected to be replaced under the city’s Tenjin Big Bang redevelopment program.
“We will be helping make the town even more eco-friendly,” said a Nishi-Nippon Railroad representative.
The ZEB certification is issued by a third-party organization in accordance with the government’s standards, in hopes that facilities’ power consumption and generation will even each other out.
Buildings are divided into four grades based on how they reduce power consumption compared with their conventional counterparts.
Buildings that can slash 100 or more percent of their energy use by saving and creating electricity on their own will be included on the genuine ZEB list. Saving and generating 75 percent or higher of power means facilities can be called Nearly ZEBs.
While those with an energy-saving rate of no less than 50 percent will be certified as ZEB-Ready, structures in the ZEB-Oriented division must reduce power by 30 to 40 percent or more.
Nishi-Nippon Railroad said its ZEB certificate applies to an area where a commercial complex is envisioned to replace the Fukuoka Building, Tenjin Core Building and Tenjin Dai-ichi Meiten Building.
Its office section was judged as having a ZEB-Ready design, and the ZEB-Oriented status was awarded to the entire complex.
Although the total floor space of the planned establishment is estimated to be 1.6 times larger than that of its predecessors, its energy consumption is believed to be slashed by 42 percent via such efforts as adopting glass with high heat-insulating performance and adding greenery to the terrace and elsewhere.
