Shizuoka Prefecture, with its geographical advantages, was the most popular relocation destination in 2022 for the third straight year, according to a survey by a Tokyo-based nonprofit organization.

Furusato Kaiki Shien Center, which provides support and information to help people relocate to rural areas of Japan, said its survey was based on questionnaires submitted by those who sought advice at its counters.

The NPO stations counselors from 44 prefectures and one government ordinance-designated city, including Shizuoka Prefecture and Shizuoka city, at its Tokyo’s office.

Shizuoka Prefecture was lauded for its proximity to the Tokyo metropolitan area, among other things.

“In addition to favorable conditions for climate, transportation and employment, the fact that Shizuoka city is the only government ordinance-designated city that has established a dedicated consultation service is a factor that gained support,” said Hiroshi Takahashi, the head of the center.

Shizuoka Prefecture ranked first in every age group, from those in their 20s and younger to those in their 70s and older.

Second place went to Nagano Prefecture, which consistently ranks high as a popular relocation destination.

It was followed by Tochigi, Yamanashi and Fukuoka prefectures.
