NARA--Nara prefectural police on Feb. 13 said they sent papers to prosecutors for additional charges against the man accused of murdering former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The latest charges consist of violating the Firearms and Swords Control Law, the Ordnance Manufacturing Law and the Public Offices Election Law.
Police seized homemade guns and explosives from the home of Tetsuya Yamagami, 42, located in Nara.
Yamagami told investigators he had mixed his own gunpowder and created the guns and ammunition on his own.
Police believe that Yamagami fired a weapon at a facility in Nara that houses a group related to the Unification Church the day before he shot Abe.
Officers indicted Yamagami for the murder of Abe, along with other charges.
They believe he fired a homemade gun twice from behind Abe, who was delivering a campaign speech in front of Kintetsu Railway’s Yamato-Saidaiji Station in Nara in July 2022.
Yamagami’s case is expected to go through a pretrial conference procedure and will be tried by lay judges.
