NARA--The suspect in the slaying of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was transported by police on Jan. 10 following the end of his long psychiatric evaluation, which started in late July.

Tetsuya Yamagami, 42, was taken from the Osaka Detention House to the Nara prefectural police’s Nara-Nishi Police Station.

Yamagami's psychiatric evaluation, which continued for about five and a half months, started 17 days after Abe was gunned down while giving a campaign speech in Nara city on July 8.

The Nara District Public Prosecutors Office has concluded that Yamagami is mentally competent to bear criminal liability based on the evaluation and will indict him soon, investigative sources said.

A formal murder charge is expected to be filed by Jan. 13 when the detention period for Yamagami ends.
