OSAKA—A whale estimated at 8 meters long has strayed into Osaka Bay and was moving around near the mouth of the Yodogawa river in Osaka city.

The Japan Coast Guard’s Osaka Coast Guard Office received a call about a “whale that was lost” around 8 a.m. on Jan. 9.

Officials using a small boat have continued monitoring the whale’s moves.

“I’ve rarely heard about a whale entering inside Osaka Bay,” a representative of Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan in the city’s Minato Ward said.

The representative said the whale likely wandered into the bay in pursuit of food.

The representative said the aquarium had been unable to identify the whale species and its actual size just from the videos.

The whale was spouting water in the videos, the representative said, but its state of health “is not known.”
