The Japan Coast Guard discovered a body believed to be that of a child in the sea off Toyama Prefecture, which comes two weeks after a young boy was reported missing from a nearby city.

A person on a pleasure boat cruising near the Himi fishing port in Himi, Toyama Prefecture, made an emergency call to report something “floating on the surface of the sea” at around 9:25 a.m. on Sept. 4, officials said.

The Fushiki Coast Guard Office dispatched a patrol boat to search the area and found a small body in the sea 4.7 kilometers east-northeast of the fishing port.

There were no clothing or belongings found with the body.

In the neighboring city of Takaoka, police and fire services have been searching for 2-year-old Reon Takashima, who went missing from his home on the evening of Aug. 20.

Reon is about 80 centimeters tall and was wearing light-blue summer pajamas when he went missing.

Himi fishing port is about 10 km from the mouth of the Oyabegawa river.

Reon’s home is located near the Sofugawa river, which flows into the Oyabegawa river.

The coast guard and police are now trying to identify the body.
