The number of new COVID-19 cases hit a record 209,694 nationwide as of 6:30 p.m. on July 27, while Osaka Prefecture is urging elderly residents to avoid nonessential outings following a surge in infections there.
Record cases were reported in at least 15 prefectures as of 6 p.m. They are Hyogo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Okayama, Shiga, Toyama, Ishikawa, Kagawa, Tokushima, Tottori, Yamaguchi, Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Nagasaki prefectures as well as Hokkaido.
Osaka confirmed 21,860 new infections on July 27 after setting a new record the previous day with 25,762.
The preliminary data showed the occupancy rate of hospital beds set aside for COVID-19 patients was around 52 percent in the prefecture on July 27, exceeding the 50-percent threshold for issuing the prefecture’s own state of emergency.
At its meeting that day, the prefectural government’s COVID-19 task force decided to ask senior citizens to refrain from going out, except for seeing their doctors or buying daily necessities, until Aug. 27.
The same day, Tokyo reported 29,036 new COVID-19 cases, up 8,635 from the previous Wednesday.
The occupancy rate of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients in the capital stood at 50.5 percent.
