Tokyo reported 5,302 new COVID-19 cases on July 5, topping the 5,000 mark for the first time since April 28 and more than doubling the tally for the previous Tuesday.
Osaka Prefecture confirmed 4,523 new infections of the novel coronavirus, nearly twice the figure from a week ago.
Daily records for new COVID-19 cases were set on July 5 in Kumamoto Prefecture, with 1,589, in Shimane Prefecture, with 755, and in Ehime Prefecture, with 582.
The figure for Tokyo soared beyond the 2,514 new cases reported last Tuesday and represented the 18th straight day for week-on-week increases.
The daily average of new cases in the capital for the week ending on July 5 was 3,778.3, a 74.9-percent jump over the average of the previous week.
Tokyo officials also reported three deaths linked to COVID-19.
Seven patients in Tokyo were suffering from symptoms serious enough to require the use of a ventilator or other equipment to breathe, up by one from the previous day.
