The total number of COVID-19 cases in Japan passed 10 million on July 14 as the daily tally continued surging in the capital and at least five prefectures reported record highs. 

In Tokyo, there were 16,662 fresh COVID-19 cases that day, about double the number of the previous Thursday, according to metropolitan government officials.

The capital had more than 16,000 new cases for the second straight day and observed its 27th day in a row of week-on-week increases in infections.

Officials reported two deaths linked to COVID-19.

For the week ending July 14, the daily average of new cases was 11,322.4, which was more than double the figure from the previous week of 5,127.7.

There were 15 COVID-19 patients with symptoms serious enough to require the use of a ventilator or other equipment to breathe. The figure was an increase of two from the previous day.

Meanwhile, new daily records for COVID-19 cases were set July 14 in Fukuoka Prefecture with 5,718 cases, Okinawa with 3,565, Kumamoto with 2,637, Nagasaki with 897 and Yamaguchi with 672.
