Tokyo reported 16,878 new COVID-19 cases on July 13, exceeding the number from the previous week for the 26th day in a row, as record high cases were reported in 13 prefectures across Japan.
Osaka Prefecture confirmed 10,452 new infections of the novel coronavirus on the same day, the first time since Feb. 26 that the number of daily cases surpassed 10,000.
Daily records for new COVID-19 cases were set in many prefectures including Aomori, Iwate, Shizuoka, Mie, Wakayama, Ishikawa, Kochi, Nagasaki, Oita, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Okinawa.
In Tokyo, the daily count was up 8,537 from the previous Wednesday, more than double the tally.
This is the first time since Feb. 18 that the number of new cases exceeded 16,000 in the capital.
The Tokyo metropolitan government reported two deaths linked to COVID-19 of a woman in her 80s and a man in his 90s.
The occupancy rate of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients in the capital stood at 31.7 percent, while 9.0 percent of hospital beds for severely ill patients were filled, officials said.
The metropolitan government has set as one of its criteria to consider asking the central government to issue a state of emergency for the capital when the occupancy rate of hospital beds for severely ill patients rises to 30 to 40 percent.
The daily average of new cases in Tokyo for the week ending July 13 was 10,160.6, or 229.5 percent of the average of the previous week.
