NAHA--Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki contracted the novel coronavirus and has been resting at his official residence, the prefectural government said on June 28.

He is feeling discomfort in his throat, but he will work online until he can return to the prefectural government building, which will be on July 8 at the earliest, prefectural government officials said.

According to the secretariat of Tamaki’s office, a family member of the governor tested positive for COVID-19 on the night of June 27.

Tamaki took a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, and the results came back positive on the morning of June 28.

He had entered the prefectural government building on June 26 for administrative work and also the following day to attend a prefectural assembly session, according to an official of the secretariat.

No assembly member or prefectural government official is regarded as coming in “close contact” with Tamaki.

The governor was wearing a facemask when he spoke at the assembly’s June 27 session, the official said.

The assembly will be suspended for the time being and could later be extended, according to Noboru Akamine, speaker of the assembly.
