The Japan Metrological Agency is warning of possible landslides and flooding in low-lying areas as a rain front and low-pressure system are bringing showers across western to eastern Japan along the Pacific coast.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely through May 14, according to the JMA.

Weather officials said a low-pressure system over a rain front stretching from mainland China to south of the Izu islands is moving through sea areas south of Shikoku.

The system is expected to move across the Pacific side of Japan on May 13 and then move northwards off Sanriku, northern Japan, on May 14.

The JMA said another low-pressure system will develop over the rain front in the East China Sea on the morning of May 13, then head northeast over the Pacific side through May 14.

Up to 200 millimeters of rain during a 24-hour period through 6 a.m. on May 14 is forecast for the Tokai region, 180 mm for the southern Kyushu and Kinki regions, and 150 mm for the Okinawa, Amami, Shikoku and Kanto-Koshin regions.

For the subsequent 24 hours, 50 to 100 mm of rain is expected in the Okinawa, Tokai and Kanto-Koshin regions.
