Tokyo reported 7,899 fresh cases of COVID-19 on April 3, up 55 from the previous Sunday.
Metropolitan health officials also announced nine related deaths involving patients in their 60s to 90s.
The seven-day average of new cases over the week through April 3 stood at 7,630.3, up 18 percent from the figure for the preceding week, the officials said.
The tally marked the sixth consecutive day for the seven-day average to record a rise.
Of the newly confirmed cases, 1,689 involved patients in their 20s. They were followed by 1,370 patients in their 30s, 1,282 in their 40s and 1,263 children aged up to 9 years old.
The number of serious cases stood at 31. The metropolitan government defines serious cases as those requiring ventilators or ECMO lung-bypass machines.
