MINAMI-OGUNI, Kumamoto Prefecture--The Kurokawa Onsen hot spring resort here is putting on its dazzling winter “Yuakari” illumination tradition, a not-to-be-missed event that runs until April 3.
It features 300 or so large and small intricately crafted, ball-shaped bamboo lanterns, as well as cylindrical ones, set up in and around the river that runs through the town to create an otherworldly atmosphere.
The attraction, which offers photo opportunities galore, is marking its 10th anniversary this year. The event is held from sunset to 10 p.m.
A couple who visited the venue came away hugely impressed by the illuminations, which they described as fantastical.
