Tokyo on Feb. 19 reported its first week-on-week increase in COVID-19 cases in 11 days as well as 27 related deaths, the highest daily figure this year.
Metropolitan government officials said there were 13,516 fresh cases in the capital, an increase of 1,751 from the 11,765 of the previous Saturday.
The daily average of new cases for the week ending Feb. 19 came to 14,824.7, which was 90.7 percent of the average of the previous week.
Officials said 87 patients developed symptoms serious enough to warrant the use of a ventilator or other specialized equipment to breathe. The figure marked an increase of seven from the previous day.
They added that 33.7 percent of hospital beds set aside for COVID-19 patients with serious symptoms were filled by Feb. 18.
