OSAKA--Business is booming at a new specialty shop here that serves colorful spring rolls using edible flowers as ingredients.
Shunshindo opened in Osaka’s Kita Ward on Jan. 11 and caused an immediate stir on social media.
Its spring rolls are made with sweet mousse wrapped in sticky rice paper and coated with crispy chocolate. Pansy-like blue and white edible flowers are used in abundance on the top.
The acidic flavor of the flowers and the elegant sweetness of the mousse are blended in the mouth.
Go Nishimura, 46, who runs an IT firm in the city, opened Shunshindo after he was mesmerized by spring rolls prepared with marinated edible flowers at a French restaurant.
“Try our spring rolls that are outrageous and full of playful spirit,” Nishimura said.
On some days, the spring rolls are sold out before closing time, he added.
The shop currently offers four varieties, including one flavored with foie gras and mango (993 yen, or $8.60) and another made with avocado and raspberry (734 yen).
The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and closed on Sundays and holidays.
