Tokyo confirmed 12,211 new COVID-19 cases on Feb. 7, up 460 from the same day a week earlier, and eight deaths among patients in their 50s to 100s.

The latest tally brought the daily average of new infections in the capital over the week through Feb. 7 to 18,193.9, or about 1.2 times the figure for the preceding week, when it was 15,163.9.

Of the 12,211 cases, 279 patients were diagnosed by doctors as having contracted the virus without undergoing COVID-19 testing.

Of the new cases, 2,080 patients were in their 30s, followed by 2,051 in their 20s, 2,040 in their 40s and 1,264 in their 50s. There were also 1,797 patients under 10, 1,399 between the ages of 10 and 19 and 1,148 aged 65 or older.

The occupancy rate of hospital beds set aside for COVID-19 patients stood at 55.6 percent in Tokyo.

The metropolitan government said it will consider requesting a COVID-19 state of emergency if either the occupancy rate of hospital beds for seriously ill patients or the ratio of patients requiring oxygen inhalation rises between 30 to 40 percent.

As of Feb. 6, 19.3 percent of hospital beds for severe patients were filled in the capital, while 10.6 percent of patients needed oxygen inhalation as of Feb. 3.

The number of serious cases in Tokyo requiring ventilators or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, also known as an ECMO lung bypass machine, rose by three from the previous day to 48.
