Tokyo confirmed 19,798 new COVID-19 cases on Feb. 4, while the figure for Osaka Prefecture exceeded 10,000 for the fourth consecutive day at 10,640.
While the daily figure fell slightly from the previous day in both areas, the number of infections hit new highs in many other prefectures.
Chiba and Shizuoka prefectures each set records for the second consecutive day.
Chiba reported 5,518 new cases, the first time the daily count has topped 5,000. The latest tally broke the previous record high of 4,659 set on Feb. 3. Shizuoka confirmed 1,799 new cases, surpassing the previous record of 1,697 logged on Feb. 3.
Kyoto Prefecture confirmed a record 2,878 new cases, exceeding the previous high of 2,777 reported on Feb. 2. Shiga Prefecture also reported an all-time high of 1,129 new cases, breaking the previous record of 977 set on Jan. 28.
Tokyo’s latest tally was down 881 from the previous day and brought the daily average of new infections in the capital over the week through Feb. 4 to 17,368.1, or about 1.3 times the figure for the preceding week, when it was 12,895.1.
Of the 19,798 cases, 413 patients were diagnosed by doctors as having contracted the virus without undergoing COVID-19 tests.
