NEW YORK--Former Princess Mako, now formally Mrs. Komuro, and her husband, Kei, arrived in New York on Nov. 14 to start their new life together in the United States.

The ANA flight the couple were aboard landed at John F. Kennedy Airport at 8:36 a.m. local time.

The couple took a different route from other passengers after disembarking the plane and appeared in front of reporters waiting at a terminal exit at 9:04 a.m.

The couple, as they passed by, bowed in response to questions from the media, but did not stop or reply.

The Komuros, escorted by police officers, boarded a car and left the airport.

Mako and Kei, both 30, married on Oct. 26. They have been an item since they studied together at their university.

Kei is employed at a New York law firm as a law clerk. The couple plan to reside in New York.

Mako is the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko and the niece of Emperor Naruhito.

Mako was obliged under the law governing the imperial household to relinquish her status as a member of the imperial family and is now regarded as a commoner.

Kei failed the New York state bar exam in July after graduating from a law school in the same state. He is expected to take the bar exam again in February while he is still retained by the law firm.
