Tokyo reported 77 new cases of COVID-19 on Oct. 12, down 67 from a week ago, and 10 deaths of patients in their 40s to 80s.
The tally brought the daily average of new infections in the capital over the week through Oct. 12 to 99.7, or 54.8 percent of the figure for the preceding week.
It marked the first time the average fell below 100 since July 6, 2020, when it was 99.4.
The number of serious cases in Tokyo requiring ventilators or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, also known as an ECMO lung bypass machine, dropped by seven from the previous day to 55.
Of the 77 cases, 18 patients were in their 20s, followed by 13 in their 30s, nine in their 40s and nine in their 50s. There were also nine patients under the age of 10 and nine between the ages of 10 and 19.
