Okinawa Prefecture on Oct. 10 said it no longer has Japan’s worst ratio of new COVID-19 cases per population, while Tokyo reported its lowest daily number of newly confirmed infections this year.

Officials in Okinawa Prefecture reported 14 new novel coronavirus infections, reducing the southern island prefecture’s daily new infections per 100,000 people over the past week to 11.18.

Okinawa had the nation’s highest ratio in that category for about two months since the end of July.

Now, Osaka Prefecture has the highest rate of new infections per 100,000 people. Its latest weekly rate was 11.81 as of Oct. 10, according to the prefectural government website.

The total number of COVID-19 patients in Okinawa Prefecture is 49,886.

There were no reports of new infections from among U.S. troops stationed in Okinawa Prefecture, prefectural officials said.

A total of 2,792 people related to U.S. military bases on the prefecture have contracted the virus so far, according to prefectural officials.

Tokyo also reported a continuing decline in new COVID-19 cases—60—on Oct. 10.

That was down by 22 from the previous day and the smallest daily tally in the capital in 2021 for the second straight day.
