Tokyo confirmed 969 new COVID-19 cases on May 12, the second straight day the daily count has topped 900, according to metropolitan government officials.
The latest tally brought the daily average for the week in the capital through May 12 to 874, or 109.4 percent of the figure for the preceding week.
Of the 969 cases, 273 patients were in their 20s, followed by 199 in their 30s, 147 in their 40s and 117 in their 50s. There were 100 patients aged 65 or older.
The number of serious cases in Tokyo requiring ventilators or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, also known as an ECMO lung bypass machine, rose by five from the previous day to 86 on May 12, the officials said.
