Teleworkers dreaming of enjoying the fresh air and being out under blue skies are waking up to find themselves tapping away at their laptops atop a roof terrace amid high-rises in central Tokyo.

The six-story building, Nagatacho Grid, in the capital’s Chiyoda Ward, started offering work space for those working from home during the novel coronavirus pandemic on Jan. 26.

The building, which offers shared office space with a floor space of 1,000 square meters, is managed by Gaiax Co., a provider of marketing support on social media.

Users can work even on the roof terrace adorned with plants and seated atop an old wooden board flooring, which offer a sense of liberation, in addition to a panoramic view of the capital’s office district.

The monthly fee to use a desk is 60,000 yen ($578). Up to five people can register to use a desk in the building. Users can also utilize communal space and shared facilities there.

The opening of the building as shared office space comes as a growing number of proprietors and businesses have begun to switch to work in such facilities during the pandemic.

Many companies sold off their office buildings or scaled back on office space as such venues are less expensive, compared with maintaining existing office space.
