Heavy snow is forecast along the Sea of Japan coast from western to northern Japan from Jan. 7 to 8 due to a rapidly developing low-pressure system.
The stormy weather will likely bring extremely strong winds and even create blizzard conditions, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
In light of that, the agency is warning people to be alert and cautious about using any form of transportation in the coming days.
The developing low-pressure system is forecast to move from the Sea of Japan to northern Japan and bring a strong winter pressure pattern through Jan. 9.
Maximum sustained wind speeds forecast for Jan. 7 were 90 to 104.4 kph in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions and 72 to 86.4 kph in Hokkaido, the Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku regions, along with the northern part of the Kyushu region.
The maximum snowfall expected for mountainous areas over the 24-hour period starting from noon on Jan. 7 is 70 to 100 centimeters in Niigata Prefecture; 60 to 80 cm in Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui prefectures; 60 to 80 cm in the Tohoku and Kinki regions; 50 to 70 cm in the Tokai region; 40 to 60 cm in the Chugoku region; and 30 to 50 cm in Hokkaido.
