TOYAMA--A special exhibition covering the expansive work of Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of the "Mobile Suit Gundam" TV series, is being held at the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design here.

"The World of Tomino Yoshiyuki: A Retrospective of Legendary Anime Director--Gundam, Ideon, and Now" runs until Jan. 24.

The art event brings together about 3,000 pieces of artwork, including illustrations drawn by Tomino, 79, when he was small, storyboards and concept sketches for "Astro Boy," with which he made his debut as an animation director, and the successive "Gundam" anime series, as well as plastic models of Gundam and other robots from the franchise.

To celebrate the exhibition, the museum hosted a talk between Tomino and animation artist and director Mamoru Hosoda on Nov. 28, in which they discussed behind-the-scenes stories on the production of "Gundam" and the importance of imagination. The talk is being streamed on the museum's website.

The Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed on Wednesdays and Jan. 12.
