Tokyo confirmed 171 new COVID-19 cases on Sept. 17, the third consecutive day the daily count exceeded 100 new infections, according to metropolitan government officials.
Broken down by age, patients in their 20s topped the list of new cases with 44 people in that demographic testing positive, followed by 34 in their 30s, 30 in their 40s, 25 in their 50s, 10 in their teens and another 10 in their 60s, eight in their 70s, five in their 80s and one in their 90s.
Four children under the age of 10 also tested positive.
The metropolitan government said the number of serious cases, those on a ventilator or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, also known as an ECMO lung bypass machine, increased by four from the day before to 27 on Sept. 17.
