Japan confirmed 98 new cases of the novel coronavirus on May 7, the first time daily infections fell below 100 since March 30, bringing the total number to 15,586 as of 10:30 p.m.
Tokyo confirmed 23 new cases, below 100 for the fifth consecutive day, and under 30 for the first time since April 1.
Infection routes could not be traced in 15 of the 23 new cases, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
Patients in their 20s and 70s accounted for many of the new cases, with four in their 20s and four in their 70s.
In Osaka Prefecture, nine new infection cases were reported.
Japan reported 13 new deaths from the virus, raising the nation's overall death toll to 590.
