An exhibition dedicated to Tokyo as it appears in manga, anime and other subculture content is being held at the National Art Center, Tokyo in the capital’s Roppongi district.
The “Manga Tokyo” event features about 500 pieces of artwork, including original manga manuscripts and video clips.
Hosted by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and other organizations, the exhibition runs until Nov. 3. It was previously held in Paris two years ago, attracting 30,000 visitors.
The highlight is an exquisitely crafted 1:1000 scale model of Tokyo measuring 17 by 22 meters. A screen overlooking the diorama shows scenes from the live-action film “Godzilla” (1954), the animated feature film “Akira” (1988) and other titles set in the capital.
Surrounding the model are original manga drawings, model sheets and video game images grouped into various themes, including buildings, lifestyle and history, to showcase Tokyo in its true and false forms from multiple perspectives.
