Japan’s popularity as a travel destination continues to climb, as October saw the most visitors—3.31 million—for a single month, exceeding the previous record of 3.29 million set in July.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization’s Nov. 20 announcement, the number for October was up 31.6 percent from the same month last year.

Cooler temperatures along with scenic autumn foliage means more people are flying to Japan, particularly from China and the United States, the JNTO said.

The total number of tourists since January has reached 30.19 million, breaking the 30-million mark at the fastest rate since records began in 1964.
