Tokyo confirmed 161 new novel coronavirus infections on Aug. 17, the first day the number fell below 200 since Aug. 11, officials said.

The infections were confirmed across all age groups. The list was led by 44 people in their 20s and 36 in their 30s, but these age brackets still make up less than 50 percent of the total.

The rate of positive tests in Tokyo announced on Aug. 15 was 5.9 percent on a preliminary basis, falling below 6 percent for the first time in about a month.

Still, a Tokyo metropolitan government official remained cautious as to whether the rate will continue to fall, suggesting that the figure may be low due to limited testing and reporting capabilities during the midsummer Bon holiday period.
