The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 258 new COVID-19 cases on Aug. 3, the sixth straight day above 200 but significantly lower than the record number set last week.
More than 450 people were confirmed infected on both July 31 and Aug. 1, reflecting an increase in testing after a four-day weekend.
Metropolitan government officials noted a trend in the cases after the holidays: an increase in family infection clusters.
Among the 292 new cases confirmed on Aug. 2, 30 were infected with the contagion at home, officials said.
For example, all members of two families of five and two families of four were infected after one person in each household tested positive, the officials said.
During the four-day weekend from July 23 to 26, many people went out for leisure activities and became infected, the officials said.
