Tokyo’s total number of novel coronavirus cases topped the 10,000 mark on July 22.
The metropolitan government on July 22 confirmed 238 new daily COVID-19 cases, sources said.
Those new numbers push the capital’s cumulative total since the outbreak began past 10,000.
July's overall count is expected to surpass April's case total, which was 3,748, and become the highest month on record.
The number of new daily cases has been in the triple digits for two weeks straight.
On July 21, the government reported 237 new cases. The number surpassed 200 for the first time in three days and pushed Tokyo's total case count up to 9,816.
The metropolitan government said it stepped up testing efforts in July, which is a factor contributing to the sharp rise in cases this month.
As of July 21, the daily total of new cases discovered was higher than 200 on eight separate days.
