It's not just the Tokyo metropolitan area that is witnessing a surge in new coronavirus cases.
Prefectural authorities in Osaka reported 221 newly confirmed COVID-19 infections on July 29, a new daily high.
The latest count surpassed its previous record of 155 set only the day before, bringing the overall total of cases to 3,681.
The same day, authorities in Aichi Prefecture, where the city of Nagoya is located, registered 167 new cases, renewing a record for a single day after logging 110 on July 28.
