New cases of COVID-19 infection in Tokyo fell under 50 for the third straight day on May 8, but 16 related fatalities around the nation brought the death toll to 606.
Nationwide, 90 new infections were confirmed as of 9 p.m. on May 8, raising the domestic total to 15,676.
In the capital, 39 new cases were confirmed, including five health care professionals at the Yamada Memorial Hospital in Sumida Ward in yet another cluster infection.
Eleven people in Tokyo died from complications due to the novel coronavirus, including three patients who were part of a cluster infection at the Eiju General Hospital in Taito Ward. At least 40 patients at the hospital are believed to have died as a result of COVID-19.
Osaka Prefecture, the nation's third most populous, reported 10 new cases, including three health care professionals at the Makino Hospital in Higashi-Osaka.
A male employee in his 30s at a care facility for senior citizens in Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, was also infected by the coronavirus, raising to 23 the total number of infections at that facility.
