Tokyo confirmed 123 new infections from the novel coronavirus on April 21, the fourth straight day fresh cases have topped 100 but have not reached 200 in the capital.

The new cases bring Tokyo's total infections to 3,307.

On April 17, Tokyo recorded 201 new infections, its most in a 24-hour period to date.

Twenty new deaths were confirmed in Kyoto, Aichi, Gifu and other prefectures, bringing Japan's death toll to 283.

Nationwide, 390 new infections were confirmed as of 11:30 p.m., raising Japan's total number of virus cases to 11,543, excluding passengers infected on the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined at Yokohama Port.

Bokutoh Hospital, in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, confirmed 12 new cases among patients and staff, including seven who are surgeons and doctors of internal medicine.

It is the first time doctors have been reported infected at the medical facility.

A total of 39 cases are associated with the facility, which can provide critical care and emergency treatment, to date.

The hospital has temporarily stopped accepting new patients at its medical emergency center and is partially restricting services at its emergency room, perinatal care and emergency medical care for children.

Despite this, the hospital said it will continue to accept patients infected with the coronavirus.

In the capital's Nerima Ward, Nerima Hikarigaoka Hospital confirmed nine new cases, seven nurses and two patients. The facility said it will suspend outpatient treatment due to the possibility of group infections in the hospital.

In Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, Soushu Hospital, which treats patients with psychological illnesses, confirmed seven patients and a female nurse tested positive for the virus. The hospital said that some of the infections occurred inside its facility.

The Italian cruise ship Costa Atlantica docked in Nagasaki reported 33 new infections among its foreign crew of 623, according to an April 22 announcement by the Nagasaki prefectural government.

No passengers are aboard the ship, anchored at the shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.'s Koyagi plant.
