KYOTO--The death toll from an arson attack in July against a prominent animation studio here rose to 36 after a woman in her 20s being treated for burns died of her injuries.

Kyoto prefectural police said Oct. 5 the woman died the previous evening.

The July 18 blaze that targeted the No. 1 studio of Kyoto Animation Co. was set by Saitama city resident Shinji Aoba, 41.

Five other women remain hospitalized for injuries sustained in that fire.

Police said the latest victim was on the first floor of the studio when the building went up in flames.

She was taken to hospital and initially was conscious, but she soon fell into critical condition as she had burns over her entire body.

Police did not reveal her name, age or address because they had not yet talked with the woman's family members.

In total, 22 women and 14 men died in the fire. Seventeen were in their 20s, 11 in their 30s, seven in their 40s and one was over 60.

Aoba also suffered severe burns and was at one time in critical condition. However, he has recovered to an extent where he can communicate slightly with the use of a voice amplifier after the respirator is removed.

While police have obtained an arrest warrant, they have yet to arrest Aoba because he remains bedridden.
