The Ogasawara islands are a subtropical chain located about 1,000 kilometers south of the Japanese mainland. The name “Ogasawara” comes from the legend that Ogasawara Sadayori, a samurai of the Shinano region (current Nagano Prefecture) discovered them in 1593. (Photo by Lisa Vogt)
