Two Asahi Shimbun reporters will accompany the 67th observation team to Antarctica departing from Japan in December.
Combined with previously confirmed members, the 67th expedition now totals 94 people, the largest ever. The figure is made up of 65 summer team members and 29 who will spend the winter on the frozen continent.
With the addition of the two journalists, Yumi Nakayama and Nami Sugiura, the total number of accompanying personnel reached 16.
The main expedition led by Shigeru Aoki plans to adopt a “two-leg system,” making two round trips between Australia and Antarctica aboard the research vessel Shirase.
Nakayama and Sugiura will cover the expedition as representatives of the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association, alongside a reporter from The Tokushima Shimbun.
Nakayama, making her fourth trip to Antarctica, will cover activities at Japan’s Syowa Station. Sugiura, who will be visiting for the first time, will focus on the area around the Totten Glacier in East Antarctica.
