Central Tokyo recorded a sweltering high of 35.1 degrees at 1:40 p.m. on Aug. 26, marking the ninth consecutive day that temperatures exceeded 35 degrees, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
This ties the capital's longest heat streak on record, previously set from June 25 to July 3, 2022.
In Tokyo, the number of “extremely hot” days—defined as those exceeding 35 degrees—has reached 22 so far this year, matching the record set in 2023.
The agency attributed the record heat wave to a widespread high-pressure system covering much of the Japanese archipelago, allowing strong sunlight to reach the ground.
Central Tokyo has logged temperatures as high as 37.0 degrees on Aug. 18 and 37.3 degrees on Aug. 24.
Starting Aug. 27, a southward-moving front is expected to bring several days of rain and cloudy skies. However, daytime temperatures are still expected to remain above 30 degrees during this period.
